Why I Started a Business

I like to think of myself as an independent woman; I believe I can do anything and get anything I want in life when I put my mind to it and work hard.

I started working two jobs at the age of 18; one was a seasonal job and the other was my regular part-time job. When the seasonal position came to an end and I went back to my regular hours and I became unhappy with the money I was making - it wasn’t enough. I started babysitting again to pick up some side cash which reached up t0 $700 extra in one month; I loved it. One job was just not enough for me anymore. I continued babysitting weekly on top of my part time job (20-30hrs/week) while being a full time student.

I studied business administration in college and I had to complete an internship to graduate from the program. I completed my stage while working my other job and graduated as top ten from my class. A month into summer the company I did my internship with contacted me and offered me a part time position; I accepted. All summer and till the end of October I worked 60+ hours each week combined of all three of my jobs. I barely had any days off unless there were holidays during that month. I kept on grinding because I had my goal of starting my business. I left my original job of three years at the end of October because starting my own clothing company made me a conflict of interest and I am considered as competition.

Now that you know a little bit about me and my work grind, here comes the question; why did I start a business?

As you can tell from reading everything above, I love to work; I’m a hustler and I am constantly on the work grind. I would come home from my full day shifts and start working and sending emails to get my business going; contacting suppliers, researching prices for packaging, websites, etc. I love to work, but I do not like working for other people and big corporations. I enjoy being a part of growth and seeing a difference in my efforts at these jobs. I always knew I wasn’t the right person to work in an office, I am not the type that can sit at a desk all day and have deadlines and reports to complete for other people. If I was going to work my ass off and put all that effort into my work, I wanted it to be for myself. Why should my strong efforts make someone else richer and more recognized when I could make myself successful and recognize my own work for the reason behind my companys’ growth?

My business is my own project that I get to work on everyday and I get to watch it grow each day as well. I get a sense of pride and excitement for every new like on a page or follower on social media because it means that my determination and efforts are working and becoming something bigger.

Another reason why I started my own business is because I believe that I have leadership skills and independence that exceed what I can do for a company and should be put to better use. I do not like being told what to do, as I like giving my own directions and doing things my way. I work well for and with others, but I do not want to work for someone else for the rest of my career. I like my freedom and having my own business will give me that. I plan to have more than one business; why? Because since I was able to manage multiple jobs and my time, I believe I am capable of managing and owning multiple businesses.

I want to make a change and contribute towards something greater. I want to have my own employees who are excited to come work for me and enjoy having me as their boss. I hope to have people look up to me and ask me questions about how I became who I am and ask me how I got to where I am. I wish to inspire others and give them the motivation, confidence and determination they need to achieve what they want to achieve. Believing in yourself and investing in yourself can do wonders.
